On Sunday, two men from Behala drowned in the Hooghly while visiting a friend at his Nainan residence in Ramnagar in Diamond Harbour.

The cops said that on Monday, Priyangshu Kumar Sharma and Himangshu Kumar Sharma, both 13 years old, apparently went to a pond near their house at Kalyangarh in Nimta for a dip in the absence of seniors in the Sharmas’ house.

No one was aware of the whereabouts of the two boys till Priyangshu’s father, Phool Kumar Sharma, returned home and started looking for his son and nephew Himangshu, the policesaid. A resident of Bihar, Phool Kumar lived in a rented accommodation at Kalyangarh with his family.

On Monday afternoon, the couple had scheduled a visit to a doctor and did not want to leave behind their son, Priyangshu, all by himself.

Phool Kumar called in Himangshu, who lived nearby, to spend time with his son and left for the doctor’s chamber only after he arrived.

With none of the senior family members being present at home, the two brothers went to the Kalyannagar pond late in the afternoon, when there weren’t too many people around.

“Around 4 pm on Monday, Phool Kumar turned up at the police station and said the two children were missing,” said a senior officer of the Barrackpore police commissionerate. “A team left with him immediately.”

Officers said after checking with some of the local residents, they realised that the two brothers had gone towards the pond.

Till late evening, when the two boys could not be found, the police called in the disaster management group personnel for look the two in the pond.

The bodies were fished out later in the night and sent to the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital.

“There is no reason to suspect any foul play in the deaths. However, we will wait for the final post-mortem report before drawing a conclusion on the cause of the deaths,” said a senior officer of Nimta police station.
